Student Comments about the Human Systems Explorer
"I love the Human Systems Explorer. You have done a wonderful job with it and I really think it enhances learning and clarifies so many key concepts. Especially useful are the animated teaching files which explain key concepts really well and help you visualize what you're learning. The animations are amazing -- and the ones where you can click on a structure or label and get more information are the best! The heme ones were very useful, as were the Cardiac and GI ones."
"This has been a great resource. I use it all the time. I particularly like the interactive diagrams (e.g. achalasia/scleroderma, manometry, ECG workshop, von Willebrand disease) and the self assessments with explanations. The detailed case explanations are also fantastic."
"The Explorer is great. I've used it for all the modules and will continue to do so. They have good information and the graphics and diagrams are amazing. I thought the Explorer was especially good for cardiac and pulmonary in explaining V/Q mismatch, shunt, and some of the more conceptual topics."
"I thought the Human Systems Explorer was excellent all around and a great teaching resource. The self-assessment exams are definitely an asset (not only for gauging one's understanding of the material, but they're also good practice for the computer format of the boards). The answers are clear and thorough -- even addressing why the other options are wrong."
"It's great. I prefer it to reading textbooks or lecture notes. It's more engaging and entertaining. The GI resources were particularly excellent. I think the school should definitely continue to fund and develop the web resources."
"EXCELLENT EXCELLENT EXCELLENT diagrams and descriptions of each system. It covers a lot of the issues I have trouble understanding and I LOVE it."
"The Human Systems Explorer Website is brilliant. In almost every section of Human Systems I and II I have learned more from the Website than almost any source. What is so great about the Website is that it takes the most difficult topics covered in lectures/reading and presents them in a very lucid and succinct fashion. Unfortunately, many lecturers don't understand that confusing topics should be covered clearly rather than in a confused way -- so that I often leave lecture in a stupor -- but I always know that if I work through the material on the Explorer, I will be able to learn it because the Human Systems Explorer is the only source that I have found that presents difficult material in a way that I can understand it. For example, when my tutorial discussed changes in contractility and compliance during Q wave, non Q wave and transient ischemia, not even the tutor really understood what was going on and he drew a bunch of graphs on the board, one over the other, and I was totally confused after tutorial. Then I went straight for the Human Systems Explorer pressure volume loops which showed the changes. After working through the loops, within 30 minutes I understood them and felt confident about my knowledge. KEEP IT UP!!!"
"The Explorer is an excellent resource that's comprehensive and easy to use. Graphics etc. were excellent and presented material in a new and distilled format."
"Wonderful -- the quizzes are great, and the interactive diagrams are great for seeing how pathogenesis takes place."
"It is a good resource! I used it for every single block (not always when we were supposed to, but eventually especially toward exam time). I thought the best part was 1) self assessments 2) EKGs 3) GI cases (self test) 4) slides/histology. Used it a lot!"
"I am a visual learner and the animated, colorful pictures of various systems are great."
"H.S. Explorer rocks! It is the best educational resource we have here."
"Excellent job. Great animations. Nice integration of case wrapups with instructional pages. Nothing negative to say."
"The Explorer is GREAT and really helps with all parts of the Human Systems course."
"The Explorer is great and is definitely worth having. It's been terrifically helpful in every class this year (Mod I and II) and I have learned a great deal from it. The pictures, the self-assessments, the cases, the instruction -- all is great. Sometimes the best source we have."
"It's great!! Many concepts that weren't clear in lecture were well-presented here. The visuals are very helpful (animations). It really helped with the underlying concepts and focused my studying."
"Great -- the respiratory shunt section is very helpful."
"EXCELLENT. Great resource -- used it a ton in cardio/pulm, heme. Very, very helpful overall."
"Very helpful! Especially the figures and "videos." I also found the weekly quizzes to be a good test of if we are understanding the material."
"I have used the Explorer for every block and have found it VERY valuable! It's going to be awesome when everything is done."
"I LOVE THE HS EXPLORER!!! It helped me clarify many concepts -- particularly with the animations. I also like the way it is case-based with questions at the end for self-assessment. I used it more than the course guide, especially when lecture notes are unclear."
"It's an excellent web resource that truly aids in my understanding of the material. I particularly liked the animation which puts real-time concepts in real-time."
"I really like all of the materials in the Human Systems Explorer (HSE). The visuals are great (the real time movies and zoom features are awesome). I find the cases really helpful when I'm trying to develop a global understanding of a particular topic. I think it is great how you have hyper-links within the text so that if I have a question with a particular area I can jump to it and review it."
"I found the explorer to be a very helpful adjunct to the "traditional" course materials. I used it mainly towards the end of my studies to clarify/confirm concepts, get a different perspective or simply to understand something I was having difficulty with. The visualizations are superb and the format allows you to really get a different and enlightening perspective on a subject."
"It's great. I have been using it as my primary text as well as to clarify information."
"I like the quizzes a lot. The answers are very helpful! The discussions of hard concepts with moving cartoons have also been very helpful."
"I really like it and use it a lot. The descriptions are great -- short and concise."
"It rocks! Very helpful learning tool."
"It's great -- I use it all the time, in fact, I go through all the web resources -- cases, teaching images, quiz questions. The diagrams are especially helpful."
"Terrific resource -- EXCELLENT. Used it a ton."
"It is a great resource. A lot of the figures hit on the confusing topics."
"I have used the Explorer from the beginning of Human Systems I. It is an excellent resource and I would not change a thing. The self assessment tests are wonderful. But to top it all, the figures (especially for heart and respiratory) are exceptional."
"Very helpful, excellent tool for learning. Animations are excellent."
"Wonderful, very useful. Should be promoted more for use in class."
