Benefit |
Minimize extraneous cognitive load on the learner |
Example |
Electrocardiograms |
Background |
As a non-invasive means of providing insight into
the health of the heart, the electrocardiogram (ECG) is one of the most
commonly performed medical tests. A basic understanding of how to interpret
electrocardiograms is considered important for most physicians. The
various aspects of the ECG are often shown with picture and caption
(see 'Traditional' figure), requiring the learner to continually shift
focus back and forth between diagram and text. This 'splitting of attention'
represents a cognitive task that does not contribute to understanding
ECGs. |
New approach |
An interactive diagram (see 'New' figure) integrates
the ECG with explanatory information, something that would be difficult to accomplish in
a non-interactive format due to the amount of information involved. In addition, by revealing the visual
annotations after first attempting interpretation, the learner can
use the diagram as a method of self assessment. Use the buttons in the
'New' diagram to display information about the ECG. |
